By Dave B. Roberts. Check out this interview in its entirety featured in the forthcoming Ax Facts & Stats Volume 2 book due for release SOON, featuring Q&As not featured in the online interviews!

My name is:
Kile Odell

My current job is:
Rocking butts for Failure Anthem. I'm also a producer.

My hometown:
Eden, NC.

My current album or project is:
Failure Anthem.

Former bands:
Bloodjinn, Vanisher.

My guitar influences growing up were:
James Hetfield, Dave Mustaine, Zakk Wylde, Chris Amott, Joel Stroetzel.

The guitars I use are:
PRS Guitars(Tremonti and a Vela).

The strings and tunings I use are:
Ernie Ball "not even slinky" with a wound G string. We tune to B F# B E G# C# and C# F# B E G# C#.

My current rig setup consists of:
Fractal Audio Axe-FX, Mesa Boogie poweramps and cabs, and a VHT(Fryette) Pittbull.

The greatest invention for guitars is:
A tuner!

My normal songwriting process consists of:
I always start with the chorus first and then work around that. The progression is key!

Favorite guitar solo from our band:
First World Problems.

Favorite all-time guitar solo (from another guitarist):
"No More Tears" (Ozzy)

Favorite all-time song (any artist) is:
"Just Barely Breathing"-Killswitch Engage.

Favorite song by our band:
"I Won't Say Goodbye."

Favorite song to perform in front of a live audience:
"First World Problems"

My Career highlight thus far is:
getting to hear our songs on the radio.

My most embarrassing moment on stage:
I've tripped a fair amount of times and almost ended up flat on my face. Nothing too bad just yet. *crosses fingers*

Other than my guitar and amps, the one piece of my gear that I cannot live without is:
A tuner (once again hahaha.)

The first song I ever mastered on guitar:
"Seek and Destroy"-Metallica.

My first guitar was:
an Epiphone "Genesis" my mother got me when I was 14.

The first time I ever heard our band on the radio was (when and where):
We were in Houston, Texas and a fan was blasting it when it came on outside the venue.

If I am only sure of one thing in life, It's:
you aren't guaranteed another day or a second chance, so make it count!

The one ritual I always perform prior to going on stage is:
running scales all while constantly checking my tuning.

The exact moment I knew I would pursue a career in music was:
I'm not sure honestly.....there’s never been another option.

The one thing most fans don't know about me is:
I'm absolutely terrified of alligators and crocodiles. Nothing on Earth is more frightening.

The best advice I could give beginning guitarists:
take your time; focus on your rhythm, playing and timing; and HAVE FUN!

Albums/bands I'm listening to right now:

  • Lukas Graham-Selftitled
  • Demi Lovato-Confident
  • Highly Suspect-Mister Asylum
  • Killswitch Engage-Incarnate

    My 3 all-time favorite albums:

  • Metallica-Ride The Lightning
  • Megadeth-Youthanasia
  • Killswitch Engage-Alive Or Just Breathing

    Best gig:
    Carolina Rebellion.

    Favorite junk food:
    Cool Ranch Doritos.

    My biggest pet peeve:
    bad vibrato.

The word or catch phrase I say too much is:

The hardest part of my job:
the lack of sleep or time away from family and my girlfriend.

What I like to do in my "off" time:
I'm always producing records. I like fishing too!

The first thing I do when I come home from touring is:
Sleep like 15 hours and then dive into work.

Previous or first day job: was super whack, but it taught me to value earning a living.

Right after this interview I'm going to:
Sleeeeep because we have a long drive.

I couldn't imagine being on the road without:
My phone. Gotta stay in touch with the lady and the 'rents.

If I wasn't doing the musician thing, I could really see myself working as:
    A producer.

    Favorite movie:
I Saw The Devil or Hellraiser.

    My mission in life:
Not to let life slip by.

My guilty pleasure band or artist: it!

    My next goal is:
Keep growing as a person and a musician, and see where this ride takes us.

The greatest contribution guitars/music have brought into my life is:
An escape from any and all bad things. Literally saved my life.

    Check out our Website at:

The one musician I would love to work with that I have not yet had the chance would be:
    James Hetfield....I would die.

If I could have three wishes, they would be:
See my mother one more time, get rid of all the hate in the world, and have all the amps in the world.

When it's all said and done, I want the world to remember me for:
Trying to make someone have a better day. If I can make someone smile or laugh, then I'm happy.
